Also, take a look at these pictures; one of Times Square in New York and one of Leicester Square
Is it not strange to see these beautiful old buildings that have such care and thought into how they are built, they are built for purpose and to last, now they have these horrible brightly coloured advertisements slapped across their face hiding the beauty of detail. What were incredibly important and established buildings are now the foundations for advertisement, mass production and consumerism. I'm not sure about the rest of you but this really bums me out.
Have you ever walked through a town and noticed how everything eye height is regurgitated crap and everything above is beautiful, ornate architecture?
Thats post modernism for you.
Until you posted this I never really thought about what they were doing to the buildings. I bet that there are very few people today who even know what any of the buildings symbolise or what is behind the huge advertisements.
ReplyDeleteWithout the flashing adverts (more so in Time Square) would there be as much interest in the place? They are what create the bright busy feel which it is most well known for. This isn't me saying it's a good thing, it's just looking at what post modernism has done to tourism and peoples perceptions.
I found this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-1317820/Venices-historic-buildings-ruined-adverts-Norman-Foster-claims.html which is talking about how the same thing has happened to historic buildings in Venice.
i know exactly what you mean, i don't think anyone would be interested in these places if they were just the original buildings, i think the whole flashing advertisements its like consumerism pornography. wouldn't it be weird though if somewhere like carlisle castle had a big coca cola advertisement on the side of a turret? like i said though, it's dead sad because the majority of people wouldn't really know what these buildings were actually built for! instead they are just known for their bright flashy screens and advertisments!
DeleteYeah. Give it time and buildings will be designed around what adverts will be put on them. There will be no thought in how long it will last, how nice to look at it is. It's only a matter of time till this happens. In a hundred years will people go visiting places for the quality of the architecture? or just for the quality of the tacky advertising campaigns attached to them? Scary thought really.

ReplyDeleteI think its a real shame, in my opinion its vandalism to put horrible neon signs and ads over beautiful buildings. Im from York and the main pull for tourist their is the architecture, gallerys and museums. Which in my opinion is the way it should be, http://www.postcardsthenandnow.co.uk/York.html this shows how little it has changed. I hate the thought that some day coca cola will have the right to put its terrible red faced Santa over some wonderful architecture
