The link above it to a piece about the effect postmodernism has had on feminism. I started looking into what effect postmodernism had on the acceptance of women in the industry, after i'd noticed that a lot more women appeared in the lime light after the 70's. Influential women involved in postmodernism are; Tracey Emin, Paula Scher, Gillian Wearing and Rachel Whiteread.
Do you think that during the 'postmodernism' period it has become easier for women to make a name for themselves? Has it become easier for women to express themselves?
that's a really good point lauren, i think it really has become more socially acceptable for women to make a name for themselves with their art. if you think about modern women before this time they were very 'put in their place' you know, women were meant to be seen not heard, i think the post modern movement has really opened everyones eyes to practically everything!
ReplyDeleteIts interesting if you think about frida kahlo, she wasn't incredibly popular when she was alive, but since post modernism, as it was around 1980 when her work started to become more widely popular you kind of have to ask your self is this due to post modernism?
Yeah, that's definitely a pretty interesting question. And one with many answers to it. I do think post modernism has opened up many doors to new things in the art industry. I don't think we could deny the fact that it has helped women a lot. But I guess we won't ever know whether women were going to have a big break even without it. This page here has some bits about American female artists.
